Pathogens as Biological Tools in Host Competition
According to the concept of apparent competition, one species can exclude another indirectly by a shared parasite, without the need for direct interactions. Here, we discuss how immunity influences host fitness in this context. On an ecological level, lower immunity and the maintenance of pathogens can help a species to invade a competitor`s space and to drive it extinct. In other parameter regions, maintenance of parasites can prevent invasion and ensure co-existence. Despite these advantages, immunity is expected to evolve to-wards pathogen elimination because the effects of intra-specific competition outweigh the helpful role of parasites in intera-specific competition.

There may be less than 20,000 rhinoceros in the world, with one species perhaps already extinct and another with possibly only four animals remaining in the wild. As the populations of these animals age and become infirm, successful breeding becomes increasingly difficult. In an article scheduled for publication in Theriogenology, An International Journal of Animal Reproduction, researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Berlin, Zoo Budapest and the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, report on the first live birth of a rhinoceros resulting from artificial insemination (AI) with frozen and thawed semen. |

| • | Spallation Neutron Source Sends First Neutrons to "Big Bang" Beam Line (Science Daily 10/9) |
| New analytical tools coming on line at the Spallation Neutron Source, the Department of Energy's state-of-the-art neutron science facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, include a beam line dedicated to nuclear physics studies. The Fundamental Neutron Physics Beam Line (FNPB) has opened its shutter to receive neutrons for the first time. Among the nuclear physics studies planned for the new, intense beam line are experiments that probe the neutron-related mysteries associated with the "Big Bang." "Completion of the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beam Line marks a significant step in the SNS's ramp up to full power, building up to its eventual suite of 25 instruments for neutron analysis," said ORNL Director Thom Mason, who led the SNS construction project to its completion. "The nuclear physics community is excited to have this new tool for exploring theories of the origins of the universe." | |
